Last week was an easy week. On Tuesday 16 February I started to grow my own parasite culture. Sadly, they died during the weekend, but my back-up culture survived. This week (week 4) I started my first assay. I have to find the IC50 of a drug. That is the concentration of the drug that kills 50% of the parasite population. They know the IC50 of this drug already, but this is a test for me. Next week I’ll know if my assay worked. This week, two girls from the Netherlands arrived. They stay for four weeks, but they have another project.
Last Sunday (3 March) I went mountain biking with Doré and her fiancé. The only animals there were impalas and orange birds. There were crocodiles to, but we didn’t see them. The nature was beautiful there and I loved it. You can find the pictures in the album 'Buffelsdrift'.
Yesterday on 7the of March I went to a SHE conference. God is still very important here, so I agreed to join Asleigh to the conference. Although I don’t believe in god it was amazing to see all the people singing and dancing together. This church is not like the ones in Belgium but more like a huge theater. The conference started with some songs about god and Jesus. It looked a bit like gospel. After the songs an auteur from Great-Britain compared a verse of the bible with real life. Sometimes you are really happy and everything goes well but in one day everything turns around. You feel bad an everything you do goes wrong. She told it in a funny way and I understand that a lot of people find support in these meetings. At the end we also got a cookbook with the favorite recipes of woman all over the world.

Vorige week was een heel rustige week. Op dinsdag 16 februari begon ik met mijn eigen cultuur op te kweken die helaas dood was tegen het weekend. Gelukkig leefde mijn back-up cultuur nog. Deze week ben ik begonnen aan mijn eerste assay. Ik moet de IC50 bepalen van een bepaalde drug. Men kent de IC50 hiervan al maar dit is dus een test voor mezelf. Een IC50 is een concentratie waarbij de drug 50% van de parasieten dood. Volgende week zal ik weten of het gelukt is. Er zijn ook twee Nederlandse meisjes toegekomen. Zij blijven hier voor vier weken maar werken aan een ander onderwerp.
Vorige zondag (3 maart) ben ik samen met Doré en haar verloofde gaan mountainbiken. Dat was fantastisch. De natuur was prachtig en we zagen ook enkele impala’s. Wat ook enorm opviel waren de feloranje vogels. Je kan alle foto's terug vinden in het album 'Buffelsdrift'.
Gisteren, 7 maart ben ik naar een She conference geweest. Dat is georganiseerd van een kerk hier. Aangezien geloof heel belangrijk is hier in Zuid-Afrika was ik toch nieuwsgierig. Ik geloof niet in god maar het was wel leuk. Er waren duizenden mensen en velen van hen gingen op in het moment. Ze huilden, dansten en riepen. Dit was natuurlijk geen kerk zoals we in België kennen maar eerder een gigantische theaterzaal. De show begon met enkele liedjes die natuurlijk over god en Jezus gingen. Het had veel weg van een gospel. Daarna maakte een auteur van Groot-Brittannië een vergelijking tussen het leven en een vers uit de bijbel. Soms heb je periodes dat alles perfect loopt en je echt gelukkig bent en de volgende dag kan alles tegen vallen. Alsof alles plots verkeerd loopt. Ze vertelde alles op een erg ludiek manier en ik begrijp wel dat veel mensen steun hebben aan zo’n samenkomsten. Op het einde kregen we ook nog een kookboek met de favoriete recepten van vrouwen over de hele wereld.
