The first twoo weeks of May, I worked on my bachelor project. It was so busy, and my head was exploding. There were so many setbacks and problems, but I’m almost finished. I went to a rugby game for the first time in my life. I’m not a big fan and the team of Pretoria lost but still I liked it a lot. The people, the game, the food and drinks … On the 22th of May, I arrived in Cape Town with two girls from my house in Tuksdorp. Sadly because of the bad internet connection, I couldn’t update my blog.
Day 1: We had to wake up early but around noon we finally arrived in Cape Town. We saw our pink house in Bo-Kaap for the first time. It was beautiful and had a view over Table Mountain and devil’s peak from our sofa. In the afternoon, we visited V&A Waterfront where we could shop, eat and make a schedule.
Day 2: today we used the red touristic busses and visited the city. There was a place with so much wind that the trees were growing at an angle. Finally, we hopped of in Kirstenbosch, the botanical garden. A beautiful place in the middle of nature. Bushes, trees, herbs and also a lot of small animals. It was amazing. We could smell some plants but not all of them were smelling nice.
Day 3: Lion’s head look okay. Smaller than Table Mountain, how difficult can it be? But damn I was wrong. In the beginning it was just a normal hike up the mountain but then stairs came. Not that hard but when I think about it, it was a bit boring. The next part was challenging. There was not path, no stairs, just rocks you had to climb on and over. I loved it but it was a bit scary because we were climbing next to the edge. The view up there was worth every second of the climbing. We could see Table Mountain, the sea, the city. Well you had everything. In the evening we went up Signal Hill to see the sunset and yes it was lovely.
Day 4: Today was market day. We visited two different markets with a lot of cute handmade stuff. After the markets we wanted to do the Capmans Peak Hill but the Uber that took us wanted us to pay the tollgate. We thought it was strange because we never had to do that, so we refused. He dropped us off at the gate and we walked a bit, but the start of the hike was still a long way. We ordered another Uber back and that one told us that Uber pays the money of the tollgates back to the Uber drivers! That other man just wanted to cash! We were very angry because we couldn’t to this beautiful hike due to this Uber driver.
Day 5: We visited Robben Island with the political prison where Nelson Mandela was held. Personally, I was disappointed. We took a boat to the Island followed by a trip by bus. There we got some information. After the bus we went to the prison and our guide was an ex prisoner. I have respect for him that he wants to be a guide in this prison, but he didn’t tell us anything about the prison or prison life. He only gave us the dates of the people that were imprisoned here. We don’t know these people, so these were just random dates and numbers for us. When we asked a question about prison life for example the food, he answered quick and vague. He just told us we got food at these times and continued giving names and dates. This is something I could have found out on my computer but the truth about what happened in the prison and how they lived can only be given by ex-prisoners. Sadly, he didn’t to this, so this trip was a waste of time. Personally, I would tell anyone to go there but of course it depends on your guide.
Day 6: Today the weather is bad, so we visited Muizenberg Beach with the little colored cabins. Even though there was a lot of wind, the beach was gorgeous. Next stop was Boulders Beach with the penguins. For my this was one of the best moments of the trip. These penguins are so cute and clumsy when they walk. We could walk on the beach and when we climbed over and under the rocks, we saw some penguins just enjoying the sun. We stayed there a while and enjoyed the fact that they didn’t care about us.
Day 7: Again bad weather so no Table Mountain. We went to World of Birds, a sanctuary for wildlife and monkeys. It was so much fun and it was funny that between the parrots, ravens and other birds there were chickens. There were a lot of animals that were kept as a pet, some of them said hello and there was one that even made the sounds of a chicken. There was one parrot that made my heart break. He pushed his head against the cage because he wanted to be petted. Further there were ostriches, owls, turtles, llamas, peacocks, ducks … There was also a monkey jungle with black capped squirrel monkeys that tried to open my backpack the second I entered the cage. There were climbing on you head and legs, but you weren’t allowed to touch them because they would bite. The next stop was the aquarium Two oceans. This was one of the most beautiful aquariums I have seen with crabs, jellyfish and sharks. There were interesting tips about how we can help the ocean and its animals.
Day 8: Finally we had good weather so we could climb the Table Mountain. We left from Kirstenbosch and went up to Skeleton Gorge. A very difficult road with stairs and a fun part where we had to climb up a waterfall. Dangerous but adventurous. The rest of the climb was going a bit up and down, but it wasn’t as hard as the first part. It took us four hours and we were lost a couple of times. When we finally arrived at the cable car there were suddenly a lot of people. You could see that most of them just took the cable car up. A bit stupid because what is the point of being on Table Mountain without climbing it. Karen and I went abseiling in the afternoon. I was really scared cause we had to abseil 112 meter while we were hanging 1000 meter above the ground. Amber didn’t join because it was to scary. I’m happy I did it although I was scared to death.
Day 9: On our last full day, we went cage shark diving. We left around 5 am in Cape Town and drove 2 hours to our boat. The weather was finally good but the people warned us that visibility was still low. They also told us that there was only a small change that we would see a great white shark since the last one left a couple of days ago. When we were on the boat and putting on our wetsuits, the crew suddenly started screaming ‘white shark, white shark’. In a couple of seconds, we were in the cage waiting for the white shark to take the bait. Every time he came close, we went under water. The first two times I didn’t see him but the third time he swam just next to me (I was on the side of the cage). Suddenly there were two great white sharks and when I left the cage there was even a third one. The crew was so excited, they had never seen this before. Sadly I was seasick and I didn’t go back into the cage. Still I could see the sharks perfectly since they attacked the bait that was lying in the water close to me. There were three great white sharks (the biggest one 3,2 meter) and four Coper sharks or Bronze Whaler sharks (biggest on was 3 meter)
Day 10: We didn’t really do anything except buying some souvenirs. We worked for school the whole day and in the evening, we took a plane back to Pretoria. This felt bad because Cape Town is so much more fun than Pretoria.

De eerste twee weken van mei had ik zoveel werk met mijn bachelorproef en stage. Er waren heel wat moeilijkheden en obstakels maar daar ben ik over geraakt. Ook ben ik voor de eerste naar een rugbywedstrijd geweest. Pretoria is verloren maar de sfeer was wel fantastisch. Op 22 mei ben ik met twee meisjes uit mijn huis in Tuksdorp naar Kaapstad geweest. Door de slechte wifi kon ik jammer genoeg mijn blog niet updaten.
Dag 1: We moesten vroeg opstaan om naar de luchthaven te gaan en uiteindelijk kwamen we toe in Kaapstad. Om 12:00 uur kwamen we aan bij ons huisje. Deze is roze en staat in Bo-Kaap en heeft een prachtig uitzicht op Table mountain vanuit onze zetel. In de namiddag hebben we wat rondgeslenterd op de V&A Waterfront waar we gewinkeld hebben en een planning gemaakt hebben voor deze week.
Dag 2: vandaag hebben we gebruik gemaakt van de rode toeristenbussen. Met zo’n rode toeristenbus hebben we de stad verkend en enkele leuke dingen te weten gekomen. Op een bepaalde plek waait het zo hard dat de bomen er schuin van groeien! We zijn uiteindelijk afgestapt in de botanische tuin, Kirstenbosch. Een prachtig gebied met allerlei inheemse bomen, kruiden, struiken en veel kleine dieren. Het was er fantastisch. Je kon er ook aan speciale planten ruiken maar ze roken niet allemaal even goed.
Dag 3: lion’s head, wat een klim. De lion’s head is kleiner dan Table mountain maar lijkt gemakkelijker. Niks is minder waar. In het begin is er een kleine wandeling maar op een bepaald moment zijn er geen trappen meer, enkel rotsen. Je moet echt klimmen op en over rotsen. Ik vond het eng maar wel heel leuk. Ook het uitzicht was het waard. ’s Avond zijn we met de Uber naar Signal hill geweest en we hebben daar naar de zonsondergang gekeken.
Dag 4: Vandaag is markt dag. We hebben twee verschillende marktjes bezocht met heel veel leuke en handgemaakte spulletjes. Daarna wouden we graag de Chapmans Peak Hill beklimmen maar onze Uber wou dat we betaalden aan een tol weg. Dit vonden we vreemd en weigerden we. We hebben eventjes rondgewandeld en daarna een andere Uber besteld. Deze vertelde ons dat de Uber de tol betaald en terugbetaald krijgt. Een valse streek dus van onze vorige Uber die ons een mooie wandeling gekost heeft.
Dag 5: Robben Island met de politieke gevangenis waar onder andere Nelson Mandela zat. Persoonlijk vond ik deze trip best teleurstellend. We ging met de boot naar het eiland en daarna reden we rond met een bus en we kregen wat uitleg. Daarna gingen we naar de gevangenis zelf waar een ex-gevangene ons uitleg gaf. Ik heb veel respect dat hij dit wil doen maar hij vertelde niks over de gevangenis zelf. Hij vertelde enkel over wie er in welke periode in de gevangenis zat maar aangezien wij die personen niet kenden was dit niet zo relevant voor ons. Wanneer er een vraag werd gesteld over de gevangenis zoals bv wat kreeg je als eten dan antwoordde hij vaag een heel snel. Heel teleurstellend want ik heb het gevoel dat ik niks geleerd heb hier. Ik kon thuis ook opgezocht hebben wie er wanneer gevangen zat en dan zou ik nog te weten komen wie die mensen waren. Deze trip is geen aanrader voor mij persoonlijk maar het hangt natuurlijk ook af van je gids.
Dag 6: Vandaag staat muizenberg op het programma. Er is veel wind en het is best koud maar het strand bleef even prachtig. Hierna gingen we naar Boulders Beach waar de pinguïns zitten. Dit was voor mij persoonlijk een van de hoogtepunten! De pinguïns zijn zo schattig en lijken zo lomp als ze wandelen. We konden ook op een strand en als we over en onder enkele rotsen klommen kwamen we terecht bij enkele pinguïns die rustig zaten te zonnen. We bleven daar eventjes en genoten van het feit dat de pinguïns geen last hadden van ons.
Dag 7: Opnieuw slecht weer dus opnieuw geen Table Mountain. Vandaag zijn we naar World of Birds geweest een opvang voor wilde dieren en apen. Ik vond het superleuk en ook grappig. Tussen de papegaaien, raven en andere vogels in zaten er overal kippen. Er zaten ook dieren die als huisdier gehouden werden. Sommige papegaaien zeiden hallo en er was er zelf eentje die een kip nadeed. Het zieligste vond ik een papegaai die zicht tegen het hek van de kooi aan drukte om gestreeld te worden. Er zaten ook struisvogels, uilen, schildpadden, lama’s, pauwen, eenden enzovoort. Er was ook een monkey jungle waar je op bepaalde uren binnen kan. De kleine aapjes (doodshoofdaapjes) probeerden onmiddellijk mijn rugzak open te doen. Ze sprongen op je hoofd, klommen op je benen … Je mocht de dieren niet aanraken of ze zouden bijten. Je kon ze dus enkel laten spelen terwijl ze overal sprongen waar ze zin hadden. Daarna gingen we naar het aquarium Two oceans. Een heel leuk aquarium met kwallen, krabben en haaien. Er staan ook interessante weetjes en tips over hoe we de dieren in de oceaan kunnen helpen.
Dag 8: Eindelijk, het weer is beter dus we kunnen Table Mountain beklimmen. We vertrokken vanuit Kirstenbosch naar Skeleton Gorge. Een steile klim met veel trappen en er was ook een heel stuk waar je in een waterval naar boven moest klimmen. Gevaarlijk maar veel avontuur. De rest van de klim ging op en neer en was ook intens. Het duurde vier uur en we zijn een keer verdwaald gelopen. Toen we aankwamen bij de kabelbaan waren er heel veel mensen. Je kon heel goed zien hoeveel er gewoon de kabelbaan hadden genomen naar boven ipv een wandeling te doen. Heel stom vind ik persoonlijk want wat heb je eraan om van bovenop een berg te staan zonder hem te bewandelen. Karen en ik zijn daarna gaan abseilen. Amber vond het een beetje te eng en bleef boven op ons wachten. Ik vond het ook wel eng. Zo 1000 meter boven de grond bengelen aan een touwtje. Het abseilen was 112 meter.
Dag 9: Op onze laatste volledige dag gingen we cage shark diving. We vertrokken rond vijf uur ’s nachts richting de boot. Het weer was beter maar ze waarschuwden ons dat het zicht niet zo goed was. Ook vertelden ze ons dat de kans klein was dat we een grote witte haai zouden zien aangezien de vorige enkele dagen geleden gespot was. Toen we op de boot zaten en onze wetsuits aandeden schreeuwde een man plots ‘white shark’. Bijna direct zaten we in de kooi en keken we onder water als de haai naar het aas ging. De eerste twee keer toen ik onder water ging zag ik de haai niet maar de derde keer zwom hij vlak naast mij (ik zat aan de rand van de kooi). Toen waren er plots twee witte haaien en toen ik uit de kooi kwam waren het er drie. De bemanning was zo gelukkig, dit hadden ze nog nooit meegemaakt. Ik werd jammer genoeg zeeziek en ging niet meer de kooi in. Toch kon ik boven water genieten van de haaien. Er waren drie grote witte haaien, de grootste van ongeveer 3,2 meter en dan 4 Koperhaaien waarvan de grootste 3 meter was.
Dag 10: Buiten nog souvenirtjes kopen hebben we niet veel gedaan. Enkel voor school gewerkt. ’s Avonds namen we dan het vliegtuig terug naar Pretoria. Heel jammer want Kaapstad is zoveel mooier!!!
